The Biology Department at Kenyon College in Gambier, OH is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time, post-doctoral position in the laboratory of Karen Hicks. This position is funded through a Research at Undergraduate Institutions (RUI) grant from the NSF to study the evolution of seasonal regulation of reproduction in land plants. The immediate goal for our NSF-funded program is functional analysis via CRISPR-Cas9 knockout mutagenesis of genes that are likely to be involved in seasonal regulation of reproduction in the moss Physcomitrella patens. Several exciting candidates have been identified based on transcriptomic and genomic analysis of natural variants that differ in their responses to seasonal cues, and putative mutants are in hand for some of these genes. This position is especially well suited to those interested in pursuing a career as a teacher-scholar at a primarily undergraduate institution (PUI).
The primary duties of the postdoc will be to conduct research; compile, analyze, and synthesize data; and disseminate results in presentations and scientific publications. In
addition to their leadership role in the research project, the postdoctoral fellow will develop the skills necessary to succeed in a tenure-track position at a PUI through collaboration on undergraduate teaching and student mentoring with Dr. Hicks. The postdoc will receive formative feedback on teaching in the liberal arts context from a mentoring committee made up of faculty in the Biology and Chemistry departments, and which mirrors the support offered to new faculty members at the College. This unique postdoctoral experience will involve the early-career scientist in the workings of selective liberal arts college without the additional expectations of service, full-time teaching, and academic advising.
Applicants must have completed their Ph.D. in molecular biology, developmental biology, genetics, or a related field by the start date of the appointment. Applicants who have not yet completed their doctorate must indicate the date the degree is expected. Applicants should demonstrate evidence of prior research experience and publications, excellent written and oral communication skills, and a strong background in genetics, genomics, plant developmental biology, and/or molecular biology. Experience with bioinformatics, statistics, and/or genomics data analysis is preferred. Applicants should have a commitment to undergraduate education, and a strong interest in developing teaching and mentoring skills. This position requires the ability and motivation to work independently and in small teams, to collaborate with faculty and other collaborating researchers, and to help mentor undergraduate researchers.
