Kenyon College invites applications for the position of Assistant Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. The Assistant Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion reports directly to the Director of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion within the Division of Student Affairs and is committed to student success in the classroom, residence, and co-curricular experience. The Assistant Director has direct responsibility for meeting the specific needs of the campus’ diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts under the leadership of the Director. As part of their portfolio, the Assistant Director shepherds our LGBTQIA+ initiatives to ensure that Kenyon’s campus climate is welcoming and inclusive for students who identify as members of the LGBTQIA+ community, and for providing opportunities to have majority students deepen their appreciation and respect for LGBTQIA+ issues. The Assistant Director is also tasked with a number of general DEI-focused educational and support functions within the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ODEI). This is a 12-month salaried position.

Position responsibilities

  • Provide support for the efforts of ODEI and Kenyon’s strategic plan.
  • Coordinate DEI-focused training opportunities for other departments and programs,
    including New Student Orientation, the Office of the Provost, and others.
  • Assist with major ODEI events and programs, including MLK Day of Dialogue and
    heritage months, and lead the efforts for Women’s History Month.
  • Assist with training for KEEP/STEM summer program.
  • Advise students placed on academic conditional enrollment.
  • Serve as a resource for transgender, non-binary, and gender diverse students and assist with connecting them to off-campus/community-based resources, as needed.
  • Provide training and education for the campus community on LGBTQIA+ issues and concerns, including facilitating the Safe Space Training Program and implementing key updates to the training materials and modules, as needed.
  • Hire and supervise student managers of Unity House and the Crozier Center for Women, and serve as administrative liaison for those students to ODEI, the Office of Residential Life, and other offices on campus.
  • Under the direction of the Cox Center, collaborate with the student managers of Unity House and the Crozier Center for Women in providing LGBTQIA+ inclusive safer sex materials and HIV/STI prevention information to the broader campus community.
  • Collaborate with student groups dedicated to LGBTQIA+ issues to provide programs, services, and support.
  • Create and implement LGBTQIA+ campus programming—for days, weeks, and months of significance such as LGBTQIA+ History Month, National Coming Out Day, Intersex Awareness Day, Ace Week, Trans Day of Remembrance/Resilience, World AIDS Day, Aro Week, LGBTQIA+ Health Awareness Week, Trans Day of Visibility.
  • Supervise the organization, coordination, and execution of the Kenyon Queer and Trans Studies Conference on a biennial basis,
  • Coordinate and promote strategic use of the Student LGBTQ+ Diversity Fund on campus and provide comprehensive end-of-term reports to donors.
  • Chair the LGBTQ+ Advisory Committee and explore a campus’ LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group.
  • Manage requests related to the Student Success Fund and Academic Support Fund.
  • Participate in College and Division of Student Affairs events and programs.
  • Cooperate with other Student Affairs staff members in conducting in-service training programs for student and professional staff members.
  • Assist in the preparation and editing of ODEI publications.
  • Represent the ODEI on various committees and advisory boards across campus.
  • Conduct other duties as assigned by the Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

The Assistant Director must have a demonstrated commitment to working for cultural diversity, inclusion, and equity, and must appreciate the value of a liberal arts education. The Assistant Director also must have demonstrated knowledge of DEI issues with
experience regarding LGBTQIA+ concerns and issues and experience working with LGBTQIA+ students. Must have experience working with faculty, staff, and students to achieve program goals. Program planning, implementation and evaluation skills are required, as are excellent oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated effectiveness in advising students and student organizations is essential, as is creativity and the ability to manage multiple priorities.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The Assistant Director supervises the student managers of Unity House and Crozier Center for Women.

Working Conditions

This is a full-time, 12-month salaried position. The work of the Assistant Director does not lend itself to a regular 8:30am-4:30pm day, and includes evening and weekend responsibilities.
Minimum Qualifications

Two to three years of experience working in higher education and a master’s degree in higher education, student personnel or a related area are required as well as experience working with LGBTQIA+ students in a college setting. Demonstrated effectiveness in
advising student organizations/program managers and excellent oral and written communication skills are needed. General advising experience, demonstrated experience and effectiveness in working closely with faculty, staff, and students to achieve common
goals; and demonstrated skills in activity planning, implementation and evaluation.
