Kenyon College invites applications for a two-year visiting position as Assistant Professor of Sociology, to begin July 2019. The Sociology Department seeks candidates with prior experience teaching courses in Education and/or (Structural) Inequalities, with particular emphasis on race, class, and gender. Faculty responsibilities include teaching a 3/2 course load over two semesters and informal advising of students. Courses to be taught include an upper level seminar in the candidate’s area of expertise and mid-level courses appropriate for sophomores and juniors. Other courses of interest might include those emphasizing social change and political economy. As a reflection of its commitment to interdisciplinary studies, the College encourages the teaching of courses that may be cross-listed and contribute to African Diaspora Studies, American Studies, Asian Studies, Environmental Studies, International Studies, Latino/a Studies, Law and Society, Public Policy, and Women and Gender Studies. A Ph.D. in Sociology is required at the time of appointment.
Interested candidates should visit the online application site found at http://careers.kenyon.edu. The application should include a cover letter that articulates the applicant’s teaching philosophy as well as why teaching at Kenyon is a good fit for the candidate, how their research will enhance theoretical and methodological discourse in the context of a liberal arts college, and how the candidate will contribute to promoting a culturally and intellectually diverse and inclusive educational environment. More specifically, we would like to know how each candidate addresses questions of diversity and inclusion in their pedagogy or research. We are also interested in learning about past experience in teaching, or otherwise working with, diverse student populations.
Applications should also include a current curriculum vitae along with the names, titles, and contact information for three references. Letters of reference will be requested from the three persons for whom contact information is provided. Review of applications will begin February 1, 2019, and continue until the position is filled. Applicants submitting all of their materials by February 1, 2019, are assured of full consideration.
